Here’s an official document from 1760 from the Mauritian Archives relating to the Nageon de l’Estang family property:

(Click on the image to get a higher resolution JPEG.)

And here’s a transcription very largely provided by Ruby Novacna, with additional parallel transcriptions from Anthony Lallaizon and Thomas below – thanks very much to all three of you for this excellent help!

Rather than modernise the text, my preference (as per Ruby’s excellent work) is to try to stay close to the original spelling, though anyone wanting to grasp what it means might prefer Anthony’s and Thomas’ versions in the comments below:

  2. Hello Nick!
I can only read a few words, do you want an incomplete transcript?

  3. Ruby: I’m hoping that someone who has read plenty of similar French documents from this general era will kindly step forward. I can read a fair bit of it, but not really reliably. How close do you think you can get?

  4. Is the little line through the “e” in the signature meant to be a circumflex accent? That would account for the missing “s.”

  5. I tried to transcribe the first 23 lines, I’m tired.

  6. Ruby: thank you so very much, transcribing historical texts is hard, hard work and I really appreciate what you’ve done here! 🙂 🙂

I’ve merged your transcription into the main page (making a handful of corrections along the way, mostly specific details I happened to know about), and I look forward to someone coming along with much more experience transcribing these kinds of French land documents (and so who knows all the jargon phrases they use) and making much more sense of it all. 🙂

Nick: Matthew Flinders’ A Voyage to Terra Australis in two volumes published in 1814 (the day he died) may seem somewhat of a misnomer with respect to Ile de France/ Mauritious. However, this renowned British explorer/navigator was one without parallel in his day and spent seven years from 1803 to 1810 as a trustee prisoner of the French esablishment. He got to know the island and it’s rural inhabitants being treated as a local and travelled extensively which was his natural inclination as a surveyor. I’d encourage it’s reading in hope that it may provide information, accurate maps, scetches and pointers that could assist in giving researchers a better knowledge concerning an accurate lay of the land as it relates to possible pirated treasure secretions if they existed.

  18. Matt: while Olivier Levasseur was pretty much a poster boy for the Golden Age of Piracy, Kidd was an Establishment-backed pirate hunter who suffered from disastrously bad luck (though what historians mainly disagree about is how much of that bad luck he actually brought on himself).

It is true that both were hanged for piracy (Captain Kidd in 1701 and Levasseur in 1730), but they were about as different from each other as could be imagined. 🙂

The only other thing that might be said to connect them is that both have been repeatedly (and falsely) linked to tall tales of mysterious maps, sultry ciphers, and tantalizing treasures, all of which sounds like Pirates of the Caribbean to my ears. :-p

  19. Nick,

Thanks for replying! A family member encouraged me to ask. Although I only usually discuss the Voynich, I follow your other articles as well, and we discuss them at times. The question has its origin in the questionable discovery of the Kidd ship, in Madagascar. Say what you will, but both things are in the same region of
the World sort of. Mauritius looks lovely; a true tropical island. I will convey your reply to him.

  20. Matt: I think “questionable discovery” sits pretty close to it, whatever it is. 🙂

I’ve previously posted a fair few times about Captain Kidd along with the raft (did you see what I did there?) of treasure maps attributed to him. Though I think these are extremely unlikely to have anything to do with Kidd, the tricky bit is that some may actually be genuine (but misattributed to him). Basically it’s a mess. :-/

  32. Anthony: 1) Andre Bernardin Nageon de l’Estang’s son Andre Ambroise Nageon de l’Estang (b. 1745) was still only 14 or so in 1760, which is presumably why he was represented by his mother. See:

…you can see that plot 130 is assigned to “Raoux”, and is near Montagne La Chau, beside la Riviere de la Chau. Perhaps plot 130 is the land referred to in this document.

Hello Nick, ok with you but if he was only 14 why the “compagnie des indes” and the”conseil de L ile de France” gave him a plot? Did they give a plot to every soldiers? It’s mysterious.

    Your doc is really great

  34. Anthony: as I recall, his father Bernardin died on his way back from India having gone there (with many others) to defend the Compagnie’s interests. And Bernardin’s father had worked for the Compagnie for many years. So there was a strong connection there.

  35. Anthony: I agree that it seems inconsistent, but I don’t have any other suggestions at the moment. 🙁

Puting things in some perspective for what it’s worth, possibly not much at all; By the year 1800 or thereabouts, the population of tiny Ile de France, still under some form of French rule, was somewhere in the order of 85 to 90 thousand. Most were slaves labouring the sugar field and timber concessions, but there were also Malay Indian indentured workers, chinese and Arab traders along with resident French Nationals. Same sort of situation seems to have been the case for slightly larger sister island of La Reunion and apparently by then there were not so many private land holders . The French East India Company had a virtual monopoly of ariable land which lasted to 1810 when the British took full control of both settlements.

Will pass info on when it resurfaces among all these notes I have.

  41. A Random: ah yes, that was the colourful account that Manu Mezino was so taken with. Hmmm… sounds like (what we in the UK colourfully call) a load of old bollocks. :-/

    Hello Again ,

From the above link , it’s possible to paper trail the descendants / ancestors back to Mauritius and Bourbon and all Indian Ocean territories.

Along with Robert Bousquets historical research , which he has posted online into what is held within the Reunion island archives.

This with a little effort will produce the names stated along with birth / marriage / death certificates and add to the mix of a few select surnames inter marrying and residing and how confusion or no confusion can occur in entwined legend(s)

For the sailor boy bernadine I found him via The mariners > mirror? amongst others.
The Estang surname of those mentioned also had land on Mahe and they also married into the Savy family , along with the Houdol family.
No doubt am sure you have other sources to tap into to cross reference.

    Hello,

dix de may is 10 may not 20.

    43. Donné au Port Louis de l’Isle de France le dix de may mil sept cent soix[an]te [i.e. 20 May 1760] ==> 10 May 1760

Hi Nick, i’ve noticed on the cadastral map that there’s another plot numbered 130. It’s near Port Louis, on the left of “la montagne longue” between 298 and 299. There’s a pIot numbered 129 in this area, so… . May be it’s just a detail.
