The Somerton Man case crawls ever on, with talk of DNA swirling ever round in its own eternal double-helix – one strand being what Derek Abbott wants, the other being what he’s ever likely to get.

Most of the current DNA chitter-chatter was sparked by the recent 60 Minutes episode on the Somerton Man. This has just had a 4-minute video update put on the web, though sadly (and as if to demonstrate how little traditional broadcasters understand about newmedia) without extra footage of two huge-eyed kittens playing adorably with a ball of string with L337-speak subtitles saying “WE HAS OWNED THA UNKNONE MAN”. Don’t these fools know anything about YouTube?

Instead, we got what some might describe as the next best thing: Roma and Rachel Egan being interviewed in the South Australian Police Museum with an ancient stiff cursed with distorted and unrepresentative facial features. Oh, and the Somerton Man’s plaster cast was also there, but you saw that joke coming a mile off. 😉

Of course, the real reason the clip had ended up on the (virtual) cutting room floor was that it didn’t really tell us anything we didn’t already know from the rest of the footage. But you didn’t really need me to tell you that, I’m sure.

In other news, I was a little surprised to find out that the Somerton Man has somehow developed a new life as a political football. According to a news story in The Adelaide Advertiser a few weeks back

Shadow attorney-general Stephen Wade has given a strong hint that the Liberals, if elected in March, would dig up the body of the mystery man found dead on Somerton Beach on December 1, 1948.

“Any incoming Liberal attorney-general would need to be briefed on the matter, but my reading of the case is it’s just the sort of case the exhuming processes are designed for,” he said.

“On the one hand it’s a cold case and on the other hand it involves issues of paternity.”

So, it would seem that the Somerton Man is now such an iconic Aussie issue that votes are riding on his back. I didn’t see that coming… but there it is, make of it all what you will.

I don’t know… perhaps I’m being a bit thick here, but it still seems to me that an awful lot of DNA analysis should be done on the living before exhumation of the Unknown Man was even remotely considered.

If I was Attorney-General John Rau (and I’m not, before I get any Tamam Trolls suggesting otherwise), I’d want (and would indeed expect) any such request to be accompanied by a big fat dossier of familial genetic analysis, rather than just a fishing rod. Hence the Tamam Shud question that’s constantly hanging in the air here at Cipher Mysteries Mansions is simply this: “Where is that dossier?

  1. There are three bodies in that grave. It is possible none of them are the real Somerton man.

  2. *Sigh* Xplor, three coffins actually. One of those coffins does contain SM’s easily identifiable _embalmed_ body, unless you are saying grave robbers have been at work? Even if, for some strange reason, his body wasn’t there, or had deteriorated beyond the reach of forensics, who would have lost anything through exhumation (except those with something to hide)?

  3. There is more to all of this and it has been sent in a report to the Attorney General and ASIO. It is not the concern of any members of the public including Derek Abbott as he is a member of the public as well. If the Somerton Man has a family the Attorney General and ASIO will be fully aware of it. There are mitigating circumstances going on behind the scenes that nobody will ever be made aware of and it wont be released into the public domain. People can come up with as little of many theories as they want all of them are completely wrong.

  4. There is only one organisation that has the Somerton Man’s full family and names on file and that is Families SA.

They have these details on file because Jessica Thomson provided them with all the details during one point of her life to assist them with a situation that had occurred.

Jessica Thomson provided a full Statutory Declaration to Families SA in regards to how she was associated to the Somerton Man.

The details cannot be made available to the Public at the request of the Courts, Families SA and due to the nature of the situation.

The Somerton Man has a family and they are based in another former Commonwealth Country and they are very influential.

The same case applies to the other country in that they also have records to Jessica Thomson and a situation that she assisted in. They cannot be made public.

They cannot be made public due to the nature of the situation.

The situation is not related to the situation in 1948.

  5. No Name: having more trolls than Tolkien is a badge I wear with sadness.

  6. No Name, whatever your interest is in this, there is a matter of public interest here (much like the fate of HMAS _Sydney_ II) — apart from and in addition to the desire of SM’s self-identified Australian relatives for answers and the curiosity of history geeks like me. “National security”, international relations, the feelings/influence of purported relatives and associates overseas etc could be hurt, should the identity of someone who died in 1948 be revealed 65+ years later? Samuel Johnson said patriotism was the refuge of scoundrels. It isn’t the only one.

  7. Just between you and me Nick, I don’t give a stuff who he was, I’d rather make an educated guess as to what he did, in a professional sense, notwithstanding the nice little set of marking tools found in his bag.
Makes you wonder that .. does it?
    Does me.

  8. No name.. I am sure as well that the Somerton Man has a family living abroad. I am unable to find out who the Somerton Man is whatsoever. From the information I recently discovered on another website I have tried to make some initial inquiries form the people I am certain are his ancestors but I am finding them extremely difficult to action. The country that you are referring to S***h A****a are being cagey and very unhelpful with anything that is given to them. I think now that the country is a republic they have closed in on many things.

We can only hope that the subject matter concerned tells someone on his death bed. Or it will go to the grave!

I also have compassion for the subject matter concerned. I am not willing to post his private life on bulletin boards and blogs.

  9. Maddox, I think you just have posted about “his private life”. And there is no reason to believe that Somerton Man wished to remain anonymous; on the contrary, there is every reason to think that his identity was concealed by his murderer/s.

I want full and frank disclosure immediately of the information you have.

As well, the allegations that former Minister Peter Garrett’s mother was a spy need immediate investigation.

    Jessica Thomson was a murderess.

  11. King Richard the third was found. Can we do the same for the Somerton Man? He may lie a the bottom
of a stack of graves covered with concrete. How well did they build paupers caskets in 1948 in south Australia?

  12. Recently Nelson Mandela’s funeral coverage was broadcasted across the media and someone connected to The Somerton Man case was sat in the audience.

The person was sat with a group of very influential people from South Africa.

Family tree research of these people are resulting in some very interesting results as they have connections to South Africa.

I believe these people are getting people to divert the Somerton Man Case in a different direction online.

The family are very interesting indeed. And I am certain they are related to The Somerton Man but at this stage I cant work out how.

They slipped up by sitting in the audience.

  13. They are a South African family with a Dutch Origin which extends further back to Germany and Russia. They also have links to Australia I found out that one of them worked in the Australian Embassy in Canberra at one point.

  14. I would be extremely careful if I was you Maddox.

Delving into things that don’t concern you can have major implications. The people who you are referring to had a family member strangled and stabbed to death for knowing too much. Wasn’t that long along was it now.

Cards can be marked very easily.

I think you are very wrong about you think you know.

They never did find out who really killed her.

I think Rachel Egan her mother and the Nutty Professor need to Back Off from The Somerton Man Case with their far fetched stupid claims. It is clear The Somerton Man is not related to any of them. The photo of Rachel Egan and Prosper Thomson’s mother Alice on The Marshall Files is self explanatory. They look the same!

But I’m sure the next rumour will be that Prosper Thomson’s mother had an affair with the Somerton Man next!

First it was Alf Boxall having an affair with Jesryn.

Now it The Somerton Man having an affair with Jestyn.

    They are all delusional.

Robin Thomson’s ears were flipped the other way around.

The Attorney General will never listen to any of these stupid claims.

Go and invest in some family testing amongst yourselves.

Its not that hard is it?

    Cash hungry delusional wannabes!

What is all this South African rubbish? What are you talking about? Maria, are you a conspiracy theorist? South Africa was never more than a nasty rump of the Empire and I very much doubt anyone important from that state ever ended up murdered on a beach in Adelaide. Back up your claims or stop the rot.

[NP Note: sent from same IP Address as “Maddox” and “Samuel Zamiteas”]

If he originates from outside Australia there are probably relatives in his country of origin who would like to know what happened to him.

I believe Somerton man was a native Australian. Maybe he was an orphan or someone who had been missing and presumed dead for a long time.

As a young adult (~20 years old, around 1920) he may have defected to the Soviet Union and soviet intelligence hired him (foreign defectors were desired spies, because they could easily blend into their native countries). He may have spend next 20+ years in the Soviet Union.

During the end of WW2 he probably arrived into Australia with false identity. As a native born Australian, he could easily blend in. No one would suspected he was a soviet spy.

He didn’t need a real job, because the soviets funded him, so there were no co-workers who would recognize him. He disguised himself as traveling salesman and moved regularly from city to city, hotel to hotel, never stayed for long in one place. A perfect cover for a spy ring leader.

This explains well how no-one recognized him, even with widespread publicity.

  22. Celestine why do you bully people online? Celestine why do you try and divert researchers in another direction? Celestine can you read?

There was no reference to the Somerton Man being South African. The commenter was referring to the possible descendants of the Somerton Man being South African.

Maddox please ignore all these people. I have sent you an email. Regards Lucy

I’m sorry? Didn’t I just read Maria warning us all not to delve too deeply into this mystery lest we get murdered like one of the Somerton Man’s African relatives? There is no African connexion to this case – never has been, never will be.

The Marshall Files is a South African website and the moderator of that site has been accused of being related to the Somerton Man and concealing his identity by various other bloggers. Those comments have since been removed.

    Again, there is no link.

  27. @ Sophie Jensen. Why would the Somerton man be a communist spy? Communists made up 20 % of the Labor party in South Australia. Wouldn’t it be more likely he was English checking on spies at Woomera?

Yes and terminated by the Spy who Shagged Him, old pencil neck Thomson and her bag of commie tricks

  29. This campaign against Prosper Thomson really needs to stop. There is no evidence whatsoever to link him to the Somerton Man. I am sure many will say that is not correct and he can be linked through the telephone number that was in the back of the book that was retrieved. The telephone number in question was registered to his wife Jessica. All Prosper’s association with this on going case is that he fell in love with Jessica and he just happened to be married to someone else. Prosper served in the war to defend Australia and the rumours that are going around are unfounded and very disrespectful.
In the past rumours were circulating that Prosper was ‘sterile’ and he was not the father of his children Robin and Kate. The rumour in question was started by Derek Abbott in a Facebook group he created. Derek failed to mention that Prosper had a daughter with his first wife Queenie which was called Elizabeth. Elizabeth sadly didn’t make it after her birth this deeply affected his first wife Queenie and she could never let go.
When Prosper met Jessica it was very hard for him to break off his marriage to Queenie as she had never got over losing her daughter.
We are all human beings at the end of the day and its life, we cant help falling in love.
Please everyone stop all this silly nonsense and use the accurate facts that are available instead of presuming and creating stories that are not true.

  30. Dear Sophie,

You are one of those people associated to Derek Abbot’s Facebook group that were creating unfounded rumours about Prosper and this has been going on for a significant amount of time. My suggestion to you is to turn off your computer and give your power cord and or battery to someone for a lengthy time. You never met him Sophie!. He was a really decent person. Focus on the new year working on your inner roots instead of chasing after roots that don’t exist. I wish you are your mother Heidi a very happy Christmas and New Year.

Dear Janice — or is it Kate?
Why don’t you get real. Call off your little boy. He doesn’t know what day of the week it is, or even what his real name is most of the time. He is posting using my name. My mother’s name is not Heidi. My mother is deceased.I am over it. I will be referring this to the relevant authorities. How many identities do you people need? Wasn’t it bad enough that you told everyone about J’s private life? Now you want to retract that, do you? You are a right bunch of losers.
    Kind regards,
    The Real Sophie.

  35. Helen Foxton: “plenty of people”? I’d say at most one (and it isn’t me), and the odds are fairly high it’s actually zero. Almost all the juicy-sounding stuff is nothing more than mere trollery. And I believe that Derek Abbott made his Facebook site private (as opposed to “closed down”) because of sustained troll attacks. Hooray for the trolls… I don’t think.
